About CBR

What is Community-Based Research?

Community-based research takes place in community settings and involves community members in the design and implementation of research projects.

Community-Based Research:

  • Is methodologically rigorous and ethically sound.
  • Puts knowledge into action through community-based interventions and programs.
  • Facilitates collaborative partnerships that engages community members and researchers in a joint process in which each contribute equally.
  • Builds on the existing strengths and resources within the community.
  • Promotes capacity and skill building as well as organizational or systems development.

Community-based research has been identified as an appropriate and effective paradigm for conducting HIV/AIDS research in Canada.
